Child-friendly dog breeds

Which dogs or puppies are best suited to families with children? Several breeds continually rate highly including the following:

Newfoundland, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Pug, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Collie, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bulldog and Border Terrier.

Of these most popular breeds most notable was the Pug which often forms a special bond with a child. The Golden Retriever is extremely patient and gentle with children. The Labrador Retriever is similarly tolerant towards children but does need lots of exercising. The Collie has loads of energy and is possibly best suited to families with older, more considerate children.

Other breeds seriously worth considering include the “gentle giant”, Leonberger, a big dog with incredible patience, even with the most hyper children. The boxer is an old favourite, another excellent choice for a family with children, as are the Standard Poodle, Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Beagle and Shih-Tzu.

Of great companionship to children would be the Keeshound, Cocker Spaniel, Irish Setter, Boston Terrier, Australian Shepherd, Scottish Deerhound and Siberian Husky.

CAUTION: NO dog breeds should be considered completely safe and due consideration and child control are essential.
